#WhatchaListeningTo Wednesday - 5/1/13

Yep, still off my usual schedule!  Oops.

Did you pick up anything on Record Store Day?  I'm going to finally get to posting what I picked up soon, I promise.

Here's what I'm listening to this week:

  • Mayer Hawthorne feat. Rizzle Kicks - The Walk (explicit) - This version isn't for the kiddies. This one, featuring the English hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks, is so much fun!  I'd love for these guys to collaborate with MH again.
  • Matt Nathanson - Mission Bells - The beat gets me instantly...
  • Eric Clapton - Gotta Get Over - This makes me want to grab a guitar and jam along... even if I don't play the guitar.
  • Stars - This Charming Man (The Smiths cover) - I am a big Stars fan, but hadn't heard this cover until RadioBDC  used it as one of their nightly "Mandatory Morrissey" songs. You can hear the original here
  • Jamie N. Commons - Rumble and Sway - The River 92.5 has been playing this song, and I love it - definitely wanting to check out his other music.

#WhatchaListeningTo Wednesday 2/20/13

Here's what I'm listening to this week:

  • Fiction Family - Up Against The Wall - A great live version of this.  FF is made up of the frontman from Switchfoot and the guitarist from Nickel Creek. Lots of talent coming together!
  • Spacehog - In the Meantime - I feel like I heard this during a '90s hour or something  recently.  Hey, 1994, heyyyyyy.
  • The Wombats - Jump Into the Fog
  • Mayer Hawthorne - Finally Falling - I was in Sports Authority when I heard this song.  Not the place I imagined that would have this song on a playlist, but gosh darn it, I was glad to hear it.
    • PS - Dearest Mayer Hawthorne, I need to see you perform live. XOXO, J.
  • The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather - This is from my friend Amy's Pick of the Week over on Radio 92.9.  I don't have to tell any of you fellow New Englanders that it's definitely sweater season in these parts, and the '60s-'70s beach rock vibe is big now, so I'm diggin' this one.  Good pick, Amy!

#WhatchaListeningTo Wednesday

Here's what I'm listening to this week:

  • The Tallest Man On Earth - 1904 - A bit Bob Dylan-esque, voice-wise, to me.  "Sometimes noise is just your mind..."
  • The Grownup Noise - Carnival - Paul's voice is so smooth - I love how it mixes with the music. Shoutout to my friend Adam on bass!  A blog post is coming about their recent show at Boston's Club Passim.
  • Dispatch - Circles Around the Sun - New music!  I SO want to see them in concert, it's not even funny.
  • Youngblood Hawke - We Come Running - Check out the post I wrote about them yesterday!  Also, go to iTunes to get this single for FREE! No dough, yo!
  • Mayer Hawthorne - No Strings - Mmm-MMM! Oops, sorry, was that out loud?  I have loved this album for a while now, and when I heard this on the radio the other day, I may have* cheered out loud. Another show I'd love to see!

*may have = actually did

#WhatchaListeningTo Wednesday

Here's What I'm Listening To this week:

    • Imagine Dragons - It's Time - This raw version from SXSW is great and makes me want to join in right from the first hand clap and foot stomp. "Now don’t you understand?/That I'm never changing who I am..."
    • Florence & The Machine - No Light, No Light - When this drum beat starts, I can't stop myself from drumming along on the steering wheel.
    • Mayer Hawthorne - The Walk - Okay, so I did a "Spotlight" on him back in January, but I have been hearing it on the radio right when I need a good jam, and it doesn't disappoint. I have a crush on MH, can't hide it. (PS I'm posting the uncensored version, in case there's any kiddos in the room...)
    • Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks - I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the song means to me, but I'm diggin' it overall... there's somethin' about it that pulled me in...  I'll tell ya one thing though - the video creeps the #$%& out of me!
    • Shawn Mullins - Light You Up - Um, hello. Sexy song right here, am I right, folks?

    Spotlight: Mayer Hawthorne

    Mayer Hawthorne hates Nickelback.

I would totally draw hearts around MH, too. #justsayin

In fact, he hates them so much, that he staged his own online halftime show from the basement of his parents' house during the Thanksgiving Detroit Lions game in protest of Nickelback's performance.  I don't even watch football, but that was one halftime show that I needed to check out (I definitely wasn't going to be watching the Nickelback one, that's for sure).  His halftime show did not disappoint, especially when he brought his father out as a guest guitarist.  My cousin Yael introduced me to Mayer Hawthorne's music a few months ago, and I've been loving his 2011 How Do You Do album.

    2 highlights on that album:
1: "The Walk" - the beat isn't necessarily what you'd expect with these lyrics, which is partly why I like it.

"From the moment that I met you, I thought you were fine - so fine
But your shitty f*#@in' attitude has got me changing my mind"

2: "Can't Stop" - Mayer Hawthorne PLUS Snoop Dogg? Sign this girl up.

To check out his great medley of tunes that he rocked out with Rolling Stone at his halftime show, click HERE.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.  If you are, Snoop Dogg will kizzle your dizzle... or something.
